Smokers have been used for many years to calm bees. The first attempt was probably a smouldering stick or some kind of a pan for burning. Metal smiths used a bellow to blow smoke, which was also used by the first bee keepers. Moses Quinby, was the first commercial bee keeper in the United States. He is given credit for the invention of the modern smoker. (1875) His design included a bellows connected to a tin burner. There are many types of fuel that can be used in the smoker as long as it doesn't contain harmful substances. Some that are acceptable to use are:pine needles, corrugated cardboard, paper egg cartons, burlap and rotten wood. Modern bee keeper suppliers sell pulped pater and compressed cotton to use as well. The original design was later changed to include an outer can and a wire grid on the outside, to protect the user from getting burned.
